The Hisham A. Alsager Cardiac Center is one of the AGi Architects’ latest projects. Settled in the Medical Area of Al Sabah, Kuwait City, it represents a unique architectural experiment in the health sector.

The AGi architects is an international firm founded ten years ago by the young architects Joaquin Perez-Goicoechea and Nasser Bader Abulhasan. The studio grants a multidisciplinary planning approach providing design services on the international global market, ranging from the design of furniture elements to the urban planning.

One of the last challenges of the studio was the projection and construction of the Hisham A. Alsager Cardiac Center, a building hosting a specialized medical function in the center of the Kuwait city.

The project concept sprouts both from an emotional intent and a metaphoric idea. The aim was that of creating a welcoming and original space; the projectors have in fact started from the idea of avoiding the usual inhospitable and negatively perceived medical ambient, turning it in a social activity hub. The idea is coherently held in all the aspects of the architectures design, from the exterior surface’s treatment to the inner development of the spaces.

The inside resembles a living creature’s structure having a heart, which the whole other parts are connected to and which nourish themselves starting from it. The heart, as to say the central atrium, is placed in a slightly asymmetric position and is clearly recognizable by the red colored cladding used for the total three stories height of the space. All the other waiting areas and connection spaces expose on it. To lend a more natural and breezy atmosphere, several courtyards have been inserted within the volume distinguishing this center from other medical buildings and providing natural air and light to the patients.
